John Galliano

Galliano was the fashion designer at Dior from 1996-2011. His work was very creative and individual making him arguably one of Dior's most popular fashion designers. A lot of his work had an avante garde style which was different to the traditional style of Dior that had come before him. Galliano's couture collections had a money is no object feel about them as they were very grand with very expensive materials used. This was the same for the Dior catwalk shows he created which took place at extravagant venues such as opera houses and had some of the worlds leading models walking in them.In his collections Galliano took elements of fashion that Dior was famous for such as nipped in waists, strong silhouettes and structured skirts and made them bold and daring.

In 1997 his first collection for Dior suprised fashion critics as it was like nothing else that Dior had previously created. One piece from the collection was a dress that actress Nicole Kidman was paid to wear at that years Oscars.

Galliano continued to make high quality, extravagant designs throughout his time at Dior. His last show was in 2011.

Although Galliano's designs were often very avante garde he still used Christian Dior's ideal in many of his pieces. For example "Dior's narrow skirts typically accomodate walking by means of a hidden fullness below the knee." Richard Martin and Harold Koda 1996.

Dior also "Devoted attention to the grande geometry of his clothing." Richard Martin and Harold Koda 1996. This is also something that Galliano used in his work.

History of Dior

1905 Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy on the 21^st January

1928 His first creative interest was in art and so he opened a gallery.

1938 he started working for Robert Piguet as a pattern cutter and this was his first job in the fashion industry.

1946 Dior set up his own brand in Paris.

1947 he presented his designs at his first fashion show.

1951 Dior collaborated with the famous artist Salvador Dali on pieces for Charles De Beistegui for The Ball of the Century.

1953 Rouge Dior was created which was Dior’s first lipstick.

1954 Dior expands his brand and it is sold in more countries.

1956 Dior released his book titled “Christan Dior & Moi” . Also the fragrance Diorissimo is created.

1957 Dior was on the cover of Time magazine in America.

1958 the Dior Powder Compact is created.

1959 Dior has a fashion show in Moscow.

1962 The first Nail Lacquers by Dior are created.

1966 Dior release their first Men’s Fragrance named Eau Sauvage.

1967 Baby Dior is released.

1975 The first Dior watch is released.

1986 Dior release their first skin care range named Capture.

1987 Dior released the first 5 Couleurs Palette.

1995 the Lady Dior bag is released

1997 In Dior’s hometown of Granville in Normandy the Christian Dior Museum is created in his honour.

1998 The first creative director of Dior jewellery Victoire de Castellane is appointed.

1999 The now iconic women’s fragrance J’adore is created.

2005 The iconic men’s fragrance Dior Homme is created.

2006 Franҫois Demachy is appointed as perfume creator for Dior.

2007 Kris Van Assche appointed as creative director for Dior Homme. A fashion show in Versailles celebrated Dior’s 60^th Anniversary.

2008 Marion Cotillard is the Lady Bag Muse. In Shanghai an exhibition on Dior is created.

2010 Natalie Portman is the Miss Dior fragrance’s muse and she has since modelled in other Dior campaignes.

2012 Raf Simons is appointed the Dior Women’s Wear Creative Director. Jennifer Lawrence becomes the Dior Leather Goods Muse.

2013 Robert Pattison becomes Muse for Dior Homme. In Shanghai the Espirit Dior exhibition is created.

2014 Peter Philips is appointed as Dior Make-up’s Creative and Image Director.

10 Minute Presentation

Peter Philips is the creative and image director for Dior make-up and has been in this position since 2014. He described the red lip look above as "A classic red lip with a twist." "Red for me is the colour of life, of love of passion of Dior" (Philips 2015)

Peter Philips said that "The insiration for this look came from a few words Raf gave me, a see through effect, a little Victorian side, pastel and also lingerie elements." Philips, 2015

Second Editorial

This is my second editorial look which is an evening look. The make-up is similar to my day editorial look because alot of Dior editorials recently have had natural make-up even on the evening looks, occasionally they use a strong lip colour to make the looks have a bit more of an evening mood. Therefore I used a red colour that is similar to the red used on some of the Dior haute couture catwalk looks this season. I also made my eyeshadow a bit darker to make it a bit more of an evening look and darkened my eyebrows as well however the darker eyeshadow did not show up as well in the photographs as I was hoping.

I put a side parting in the hair because strong partings were used in the Dior collections this season. I put the hair behind the ears to show off the make-up and also to try and make the look more sophisticated. I put very loose curls in the bottom of the hair to give it some movement as Dior hair is very rarely completely straight but I kept the rest of the hair quite sleek to add to the sophisticated mood.

I chose the dress because the style of it reminded me of classic Dior dress silhouettes and the little black dress is something Christian Dior was a big fan of. I did try a few shots with a coat that I thought looked like it could be Dior and that I thought worked well with the rest of the look but I was not as pleased with how they look overall so I think for my submission I am going to use photographs without the coat. The spring/summer trends I used in this look were red lips and a strong parting in the hair.

The quote below by Christian Dior inspired this look

"Black- The most popular and the most convenient and the most elegant of all colours. And I say colour on purpose because black may be sometimes just as striking as a colour. It is the most slimming of all colours and, unless you have a bad complexion, it is one of the most flattering. You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. I chose this dress with a satin look finish because Dior states:
"Satin-The most glamourous and at the same time the most convenient of fabrics for evening dresses." Christian Dior, 2007, The Little Dictionary of Fashion.
