Dewy and Matte Foundaton

27th January 2016

Dewy and matte base.

Matte:

Cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin.

Apply a matte primer

Use a light foundation and apply it to the skin using a small amount at first and building it up. The
idea with this make-up is that the natural skin still comes through the make-up so it looks more natural and it is not a really heavy look.

If the foundation you have is too heavy mix it with a primer or moisturiser to make it thinner and so it blends into the skin better

Then apply concealer to any areas that need it.

Use a mattifying powder to set the make-up.

Dewy:

Cleanse, tone and moisturise the skin.

Use a primer that gives a dewy finish, you could also use an illuminator all over the skin or just on the areas you want to highlight depending on how illuminating and dewy your primer and foundation is.

Then apply a foundation that helps to give a dewy finish such as a satin finish foundation. If your foundation does not give the finish you want then you can mix an illuminator or highlighting product into it to create a better finish.

Then use a liquid highlighter on the tops of the cheeks, down the centre of the face, on the eyelids and anywhere else you want to highlight. I used Collection Speedy Highlighter 01 and Sephora Radient Illuminising Drops in Morning Light.

Then use a small amount of powder on the areas that you feel need it but don’t use a matte powder as this will take away the luminosity that the other products have created.

Finally use a shimmer powder highlighter to enhance the highlighted areas of skin even more.

Evaluation:

The matte skin base was quite easy to achieve because I use this method of applying foundation a lot in my university work. The only difference being that I applied slightly less foundation than usual so that the natural skin still came through the make-up and also I used a bit more powder so that the look was as matte as possible. The dewy look was slightly more difficult because I used two highlighters that I had not used before so as with any new product it took a bit of experimenting to get the right amount of product to create the look I wanted. We were encouraged not to use as much product as usual so that the natural texture of the skin was still present but I found this a little difficult as I needed to cover acne so I used a bit more product than I would of done on someone without acne.

I decided to practice both the dewy and matte looks on myself so that I could carry on trying experimenting with the new products.

Inn the photographs above I created a matte look using the same products I had done previously apart from I mixed the foundation with a matte moisturiser so that the coverage was not as heavy. This worked well as the foundation became more of a tinted moisturiser that was easier to work with and also created a more natural looking coverage. However even though the moisturiser was mattifying the skin still looked a bit too dewy for the matte look so I needed to use more matte powder than before. The only other make-up I used was a natural lipstick which was Lancome Shine lover 212 and a bit of black mascara to complete the look.

I then tried a dewy look and used a moisturising primer mixed into the foundation this time. This again worked to make the foundation thinner and look more natural. However the forehead and down the centre of the nose looked a bit greasy rather than dewy from the moisturiser so I used a shimmer powder highlighter on these areas so that the powder combated the greasiness but the shimmer still made the skin look dewy. I also used Collection Speedy Highlighter 01 and Sephora Radient Illuminising Drops in Morning Light to give a dewy finish to the skin. These are the same highlighter that I used before but I think I was more successful this time as I had practised using them and so knew how to use more of the product to create a better finish

Dior Poison perfumes

I have chosen to base my adverts on two of the Dior poison perfumes. I chose these products because I want to do something dramatic and I think these will be the best Dior products to do this because their name and packaging can have connotations of being dark and mysterious. I want to use the rich colours from the bottles as inspiration for my looks. Dior uses a similar concept in their J'adore perfume adverts as they have the bottle representing the female shape and the model is dressed in a similar way to what the perfume bottle looks like.

As can be seen the bottle is tall, gold and has a lot of detail around the neck and these elements can also be seen on the model. The way that the product is branded seems to suggest the Dior is trying to make women aspire for greater things in life.

In the products advertising, Dior uses phrases such as "It's not heaven, it's a new world" Suggesting that Dior want the consumer to believe that the perfume can change their fantasy world into reality. Other phrases used when advertising the product are "And now it's the time, the only way out, is up, I've seen the light" as if the product will help the consumer to realise their potential. "The past can be beautiful, a memory, a dream, but it's no place to live." All of these phrases are positive and are trying to encourage the consumer to better themselves and there lives and Dior is trying to suggest that by wearing the perfume they will be helped to achieve this. Dior seems to try and link fantasy and reality and make them come together to create an ideal world that people will want to be apart of.

In my designs I am going to use more of the elements of fantasy than the reality because I think that would suit my products better and I am going to use the idea of using the same colours on my model as are on the bottle.

I think the two poison perfumes I am going to choose to advertise are Hypnotic Poison and Pure Poison. I chose Hypnotic poison because I like the intensity of the red and black colours that are used on the bottle and I think they could be used to create a dramatic look. I chose Pure Poison because it stands out to me as being different from the other perfumes with white being used as a colour to represent poison rather than a dark colour and so I think researching this concept will be interesting. Also the colours used on the two perfumes are completely different and so hopefully I can create contrasting looks.

These are adverts for Dior Midnight Poison which is now discontinued, however in these adverts I like the composition of the photograph and also how the product and brand logo are positioned and so i am going to use these as inspiration. Also these are examples of when the colours of the product have been used in the advert and I think it works well to create a dramatic, eye-catching look.

Alexia matte or dewy skin

We were given the choice of creating a look with either matte or dewy skin. I choose matte as I had created a lot of dewy looks recently and so decided to practice doing a matte base.
I wanted the look to be quite classic with minimal make-up of the eyes and eyebrows and a statment colour on the lips.
I wanted the look to be influenced by classic hollywood/1940's make-up as this was when the Dior brand started and so I chose a traditional red lipstick which was Kryolan LC008 and LC009. For the base I used moisturiser followed by Illamasqua matte primer and then I used foundation with cool tones in it which was Kryolan G177 and Illamasqua loose powder. I then brushed through the eyebrows and used Max Factor black mascara on the eyelashes. I wanted to do this look because often Dior have quite subtle eye make-up and a statement lip. To improve the look I think I could of filled in the eyebrows a bit to make them look stronger and to make them more of a feature in the look as was often done in classic hollywood make-up.
For the hair I brushed it with a paddle brush and then smoothed out the hair using straighteners as it had kinks in from where my model had her hair up. I tried to create a soft look with the straight hair which is common in Dior looks as they rarely have completely poker straight hair.

The first time I used Dior

When it was my 14th birthday part of my present from my parents was to have my make-up done at the Dior make-up counter in our local department store. This was the first time that I had my make-up applied by a professional make-up artist and was the first time that I wore high end make-up products. Also it was the first time that I owned designer make-up as my mum bought me a Dior lipgloss and blusher set as part of my present. After I had my make-up done I went to a local photography studio and had professional photographs taken also as part of my birthday present. Although I had previously had photographs taken by the same photographer it was when I was a lot younger and so this was the first time that I really appreciated the equipment and skill required in beauty photography. I still have these products today and I think part of the reason I have kept them is that they remind me of an important time in my life when I fully realised by interest in beauty and photography. I still like the brand today and use Dior lipgloss and perfume so I am using the brand in my project as I am very interested to learn more about Dior.
